Abstract

In this work, due to rapid development of BEM, thermal conduction problem is solved using the boundary integral equation formulation and boundary element solution method. Arbitrary bodies which are three dimensional in shape are analyzed and addressed. The geometry of the body is divided into triangular patches using triangular patch modeling. A numerical solution is developed by defining the basis functions on the face of the triangles generated in the triangular patch modeling, in contrast to defining it on the nodes as followed in the regular BEM solutions. The temperature distribution from the surface of the hot body is plotted for different boundary temperature. Also the convergence study is conducted to get the solution convergence towards the exact solution for the case of a sphere. Other geometries bodies like cube and cylinder are also treated.

Abstract

The present work, aims at investigating the wear properties of AA2024 alloy before and after introducing micro size Boron Carbide (B₄C) particulates. B₄C particulate reinforced AA2024 alloy metal matrix composites were prepared by stir casting method. Weight fraction of the reinforcement was varied 0 to 6 wt. % of B₄C in steps of 3 wt. %. For each composite, during processing the reinforcement particles were pre-heated to a temperature of 400°C and then dispersed into the vortex of molten AA2024 alloy. The micostructural characterization was done using scanning electron microscope, which revealed uniform distribution of B₄C particles in Al matrix. Pin-on-disc wear testing machine was used to evaluate the wear of prepared specimens, in which a hardened EN32 steel disc was used as the counter face. The results revealed that the wear in terms of height loss was increased with increase in normal load and sliding speed for all the conditions. Further, wear studies also suggest that wear resistance of the AA2024-3 & 6 wt. % B₄C composites was lesser than that of the AA2024 matrix.

Abstract

The experimental investigations on existing diesel engine adopted with two after treatment devices viz; Diesel particulate filters, Diesel oxidation catalyst with injection of fluids at the exhaust pipe were carried out. In the first part of the experimentation, only DPF and DOC were fixed; performance and emissions were measured at all the loads. Injecting fluid viz; urea solution, sodium chloride and distilled water separately at the exhaust pipe was second part of the experimentation keeping same DPF and DOC. From all the emission values, the optimum condition leading to least emission value is engine having both DPF and DOC and injecting urea solution at the exhaust pipe. Running the existing diesel engine with this suggested optimum condition would lead decremental of 79.3% in smoke, 41.1% in CO and 30.3% in NO_x emissions.

Abstract

In the 21st century one of the biggest challenges is high demand for fossil fuel sources because of the rapid growth of automotive industry. The reduction of fossil fuel sources and environmental degradation are the major problems the world facing in present scenario. Since the petroleum fuel sources are limited and exhaustible in nature, a lot of efforts are needed to reduce the dependency over them. Because of all these reasons, it is very essential to search for renewable environment friendly alternate fuel for replacement of diesel fuel in diesel engines. So, in this regard, an attempt is made by using the blends of hemp biodiesel in a computerised water-cooled, single cylinder, four stroke diesel engine. As per ASTM standards, the determined fuel properties for hemp biodiesel and all its blends are found comparable with diesel fuel. The combustion characteristics of diesel engine fuelled with hemp biodiesel blends are determined and compared to diesel fuel. As per combustion characteristics determined, the maximum cylinder pressure, maximum net heat release rate and maximum cumulative heat release rate fuelled with blends of hemp biodiesel are found comparable with that reached by diesel fuel at full load condition.
